Club ACTIVITIES and EVENTS

JARC Christmas Banquet

The Joplin Amateur Radio Club holds their annual Christmas Dinner the 2nd Tuesday in December at one of the area dining establishments. Mainly a social event, it is an opportunity for speeches, club awards, recogntion plaques, and various prizes, finishing with the passing of the gavel to the new president.

This year, JARC CHRISTMAS BANQUET/PARTY will be held at Ryan's Family Restaurant located on the west side of Range Line Road, just north of 7th Street. It will be held Tuesday, December 9th, starting at 6:30 p.m. It is buffet style restaurant. We have a room reserved. Immediately after dinner, awards will be given and the gavel passed, followed by a raffle.

This annual event is open to ALL area HAMS and their spouses. We encourage you to come spend an evening with your fellow radio amateurs from around the four state area.

More about this years event

Beside club awards, passing the gavel and other stuff, for fun there will be a ONE BUCK RAFFLE for several door surprises of value. The club has purchased some nice gifts to be raffled. In addition, if you feel like donating something, just keep the cost below $11 and make sure it relates to Ham Radio in some way. Gag gifts are okay. Be sure to wrap it up, so it is a mystery!

All items will be raffled after dinner. Since the Christmas party was cancelled last year, this will be the first time we have tried this, but it should be a hoot :-)

More about the Joplin Hamfest

Each year, the Joplin Amateur Radio Club sponsors this Hamfest which has become one of the premier events in the midwest. The hamfest recently was expanded to two consecutive days, starting Friday evening, then all day Saturday. Started in 1990, it has been held at the John Q. Hammon's Trade Center located off of South Range Line in Joplin, Missouri for over 10 years, having moved there in 1994.

Situated less than 200 miles from several major cities in four states, including Little Rock, Ft. Smith, Fayetteville, Wichita, Topeka, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City and Springfield, this hamfest has become popular with amateurs and vendors across the Middle West. It features over 200 tables, spacious parking with easy access, wide aisles, forums, testing, and prizes.

With the recent changes in the licensing requirements, the hamfest has started offering two VE testing sessions, Friday evening at 7:00 pm, and Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. You must pre-register for the Friday test session to be guaranteed a seat.

The Hamfest opens at 4 PM Friday afternoon and runs until 9 PM. This Early Bird opening of the Hamfest includes an old fashioned cookout from 5:30 to 7 PM, which includes a Burger or Bratz and sides, refreshments are available.

Saturday, the doors open at 8 AM, with prize drawings and forums throughout the day. The Grand Prizes are given away just before 2 PM. The Exchange Club of Carthage is on site with their Food Trailer ready to serve you throughout the day.

Commercial vendors are encouraged to email the hamfest committee and request a DEALER PACKET which will provide registration and tax information. Pre-registration offers the advantage of getting your business listed in the flyer and on the website. Packets will be available for the 2009 event in October of 2008.

HAMS are encouraged to bring their families and spend the weekend discovering the rich history of the Ozark area playground located all around our town! Information and maps will be available at the Hamfest about several area attractions and area events held Saturday.

Some of the attractions include Spiva Art Museum, Richardson's Chocolate Factory, SandStone Gardens, and the Joplin Museum Complex - where you can discover the colorful history of this area and the third largest lead and zinc producing region in the world. The new Downstream Casino Resort located just minutes away. For the teens in your family The Bridge an indoor ramp park and hangout - located right next door!

For information about other things to do in the Joplin area, visit the Joplin Convention Visitors Bureau. Here you can obtain literature and discover more about Joplin and the surrounding area in the foothills of the Ozarks.

Plan to bring the family and have some fun!

Check this website often, as we will be updating this information in more detail over the next several months.

Hwy 66

US Highway 66, established in 1926, was the first major improved highway to link Chicago with Los Angeles.  Through stories, songs, and TV shows, the highway came to symbolize the spirit of freedom of the open road, inspiring many to see America.  If you are old enough, when you listen to the sounds of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra you will visualize Todd and Buzz cruising down the highway toward another adventure in that sleek Corvette!

Jeff Richardson, W6JJR, Chairman of the Route 66 Committee, indicated that there will be 17 officially designated stations along the route from Santa Monica, California to Chicago, and two additional Roving Stations.

This year will be the 82nd anniversary of the "Route 66" highway network and the 9th year for "Route 66 On the Air." The dates chosen for this years' Special Event will be from Saturday, September 13th (0000Z) thru Sunday, September 21st (2400Z).

Visit the new CBARC website at www.w6jbt.org, and go to the "Route 66 OTA 2008 Event" for general event details. We will update the Route 66 information on the website when we have all stations confirmed.

This special event offers hams a fun way to relive their own memories of Route 66, and to celebrate the highway's annual anniversary.  Amateur Radio clubs using 1x1 call signs operate from cities along the highway during the special event period in September. This year, Joplin is assigned the callsign W6N.

The event coordinator for Joplin Missouri is Bill Reynolds, N6HXI. Contact Bill if you have questions. He may also be reached at 417-483-7396.

For certificate information, QSL routes for all the stations, and general info click here Special Event - ROUTE 66 On The Air.
For Joplin, the QSL route is: JARC, PO Box 2983, Joplin, MO. 64803.
It is important that you include a self addressed stamped envelope to cover the cost of return postage.

October TailGater

This outdoor tailgate is always held at Ewert Park the first Saturday in October.

For 2008, it will be held Saturday, October 4th. The event is FREE, and starts at 8:00 AM sharp. There are plenty of parking spaces near the new pavillion, however, if you intend to sell items you will need your own chairs and tables. Free coffee and donuts are always provided.

Look for the bright yellow banner near the tennis courts!

At the right is a map of Joplin showing the location of Ewert Park.
